Denial-of-service attacks are web attacks that thrive by overwhelming targeted servers with bogus requests for data, which then makes it difficult for flow of legitimate web traffic.
Internet companies like Google, Amazon and Cloudflare have confirmed the biggest ever denial-of-service attacks in reports and blogposts. Google blog post reported that only two minutes of the denial-of-service attack “generated more requests than the total number of article views reported by Wikipedia during the entire month of September 2023”.
It is unknown who the perpetrators of these attacks are but U.S. news reports that all three companies said that the attack was enabled by a weakness in HTTPS/2(Secure protocol for data transfer on the web) web traffic which makes servers vulnerable to rogue request.
Companies are however encouraged to update their webservers to mitigate vulnerability risk.
